DV/DT Filters
A dV/dt filter is a compact L-R-C output filter fitted between a PWM drive and its motor to slow the rate of voltage rise (dV/dt) and clip the reflected-wave overvoltage spikes produced by fast IGBT switching.
Overview
A dV/dt filter is a compact L-R-C output filter fitted between a PWM drive and its motor to slow the rate of voltage rise (dV/dt) and clip the reflected-wave overvoltage spikes produced by fast IGBT switching. Those spikes — amplified by cable length between drive and motor — age the motor winding insulation and cause premature failure; the filter limits the rate of rise (typically to around 1,000 V/µs on a 480 V system) and peak voltage, protecting the windings while adding negligible loss and not degrading drive dynamics. ACE's design is a 3-phase, 3-wire unit using a series line reactor plus an R-C snubber. Buyers choose a dV/dt filter over a full sine filter when motor cable runs are short-to-medium, when a low-cost, low-loss, compact solution is preferred, and when only motor-insulation protection (not a fully sinusoidal output) is required.
