A passive broad-band harmonic filter (BBF) is a wide-bandwidth LC filter that attenuates a continuous band of harmonic frequencies rather than being sharply tuned to single orders, avoiding the resonance problems of conventional shunt-tuned filters.

Overview

A passive broad-band harmonic filter (BBF) is a wide-bandwidth LC filter that attenuates a continuous band of harmonic frequencies rather than being sharply tuned to single orders, avoiding the resonance problems of conventional shunt-tuned filters. ACE's broadband design pairs a series low-pass section with a shunt high-pass section so the filter behaves as the local source for the load's harmonic demand, cutting harmonics at the supply end while improving system power factor — a 'two-in-one' benefit. Because it uses no electronics, control algorithms or firmware, it is rugged, maintenance-free, reliable and inexpensive, and is easy to retrofit near the load to reduce bus-duct I²R losses and skin effect. Buyers choose the broad-band variant over simple shunt-tuned filters where they want stable, resonance-free harmonic mitigation across many 6-pulse VFD loads without the cost and complexity of active harmonic filters.
