High-frequency transformers are magnetic components wound on ferrite (or other soft-magnetic) cores to operate in the tens-of-kHz to MHz range used by switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), inverters, DC-DC converters, induction heating and similar power-electronics.
Overview
High-frequency transformers are magnetic components wound on ferrite (or other soft-magnetic) cores to operate in the tens-of-kHz to MHz range used by switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), inverters, DC-DC converters, induction heating and similar power-electronics. Operating far above line frequency lets a much smaller core transfer the same power, so these units are compact and lightweight while providing the three core functions of a transformer: energy transfer, voltage step-up/step-down, and galvanic isolation between primary and secondary. They are designed around low core loss, controlled leakage inductance and high-frequency winding techniques (litz wire, interleaving) to keep efficiency high and limit heating. ACE builds these to the customer's electrical specification, making them suited to OEM power-electronics and custom converter designs rather than off-the-shelf use. A buyer chooses a custom high-frequency transformer when a standard part cannot meet the required turns ratio, isolation, footprint or thermal and waveform conditions of their converter.
