A detuned reactor is a three-phase inductor connected in series with each step of a power-factor-correction (PFC) capacitor bank to shift the bank's resonant frequency below the lowest significant harmonic (typically the 5th).
Overview
A detuned reactor is a three-phase inductor connected in series with each step of a power-factor-correction (PFC) capacitor bank to shift the bank's resonant frequency below the lowest significant harmonic (typically the 5th). This 'detunes' the LC circuit so the capacitors cannot resonate with system harmonics — preventing harmonic amplification, capacitor and transformer overloading, and voltage distortion in networks with high THD from non-linear loads. The detuning is set by the tuning factor (p): common values are 7% (tuned ~189 Hz at 50 Hz), 14%, and 5.67% for higher-order harmonic environments. ACE manufactures these as natural-cooled, compact, H-class dry-type reactors with high linearity (>=180% of rated current per the existing site) and low losses, designed to carry rated plus harmonic current without significant inductance drop. Buyers choose ACE to protect capacitor banks and stabilise PFC panels in harmonic-rich plants.
