Buck-boost inductors are the energy-storage chokes at the heart of buck, boost and buck-boost switching power-conversion stages, where they store energy during the switch on-time and release it during the off-time to step the output voltage down or up.

Buck-boost inductors are the energy-storage chokes at the heart of buck, boost and buck-boost switching power-conversion stages, where they store energy during the switch on-time and release it during the off-time to step the output voltage down or up. The inductance value sets the current ripple and the boundary between continuous and discontinuous conduction, while the core and conductor must carry the peak current without saturating. ACE builds these as custom wound inductors to a specified inductance, RMS/DC current and saturation current for rectifiers, battery chargers, SMPS, converters and DC-DC stages, choosing core material (powder/ferrite/gapped silicon steel), gap and winding to control ripple, core loss and temperature rise.
