A PWM rectifier (also called an active front-end, AFE) is an IGBT-based AC-to-DC converter that uses pulse-width-modulation switching and current-vector control to draw near-sinusoidal input current at unity power factor while regulating a stable DC-bus voltage.

Overview

A PWM rectifier (also called an active front-end, AFE) is an IGBT-based AC-to-DC converter that uses pulse-width-modulation switching and current-vector control to draw near-sinusoidal input current at unity power factor while regulating a stable DC-bus voltage. Unlike diode/SCR rectifiers, the PWM rectifier actively shapes the line current, achieving very low input current THD (typically well under 5 percent) so the system meets IEEE-519 / IEC 61000 power-quality limits without bulky passive filters. Because the IGBT bridge is bidirectional, it supports regeneration / four-quadrant operation — energy from a decelerating or overhauling load can be fed back to the grid instead of being dissipated. Buyers choose ACE's PWM rectifiers for clean, regulated DC with unity power factor and regenerative capability, as the front end for drives, common DC-bus systems and power-conditioning equipment.
